Really feeling crummy, I managed to push through and complete my goal of 6 miles. Battling some head cold/allergies. Pace was slow, but going 6 actually allowed me to get loosened up towards the end. Just ran around my neighborhood.

800s with a cold, in the warm night
too many cookies yesterday afternoon. Didn't get home until after 6, and didn't get started on this run until almost a quarter till 7.
warm up - 12 mins (to Marion Diehl track):
Started the first interval without knowing what I wanted to do. After about 500 meters I think I decided on an 800. Hit the first interval kinda slow, but my legs were not feeling real great yet. Also, my head felt stuffy/runny, and I was a little malnourished. rested 2 mins (as I would btw them all, except the middle) then set off on another. Into that second one, I decided I would stick to 800s for this "workout."
After the third one, I decided I would make it 6 800's, but would rest a little more at this 'half way' mark. ( about 3 mins).
The last 3 were quicker, and the very last one I really went after it with about as much as I had. Maybe would have been faster, but I went pretty good on the 5th one, too.
311, 257, 254, 254, 243, 232
cooled down about 8 mins back to my house.

San Diego, Sickness, and a Race (Recap from 9/11 to 9/19)
9/11 Sunday - Flew to San Diego for a company meeting. The airport was quite and thin. Flight was fine, Thank God. Good day of rememberance and realizing the Panthers have a franchise QB!! No running
9/12 Monday - After the day's meeting, got out for a light run around San Diego. Had to watch the clock so I could make it back in time for the evening's events, but was able to squeez in 4.5 miles of running around the hills.
9/15 Thursday - With two days off (Busy and Tired as hell are my excuses!) I really needed to exercise the legs. Trying to salvage the week with a good race, I didnt' want to overdo it - as I normally like to take the day off 2 days before a race anyway. Just ran 3.5 miles easy, but could tell there were some cobwebs.
9/17 Saturday - Hit the Brixx Race 10K - So the day before I knew I wasn't being the smartest in terms of preparing for the race by going to the Incubus concert at Verizon Ampetheater, but with 11 races I'm not the kind of guy to let running ALWAYS get in the way. And on top of that, I started coming down with a sore throat Friday afternoon. The last couple days in San Diego whiped me out as I didn't get enough rest, and I just felt run down. But on to the concert I went, and had a very late bed-time!
So after 4 hours of sleep, and with a throbbing sore throat I get out of bed and hazily put my clothes on and get out the door. I was so tired, I just sat in a booth at Brixx Pizza (pre-race site) and watch others warm up, until 15 mins before the race where I sauntered out and forced myself to warm up for 10 mins.
That allowed me to at least get warm, and when I toed the line, I was just hoping for the best. The first mile was sort of downhill, and I felt alright as I settled in behind the faster runners and knew I really had to watch my pace given my condition. Hit 6.03 for the first mile, and that felt fine. Started to climb the second mile a little, but while I thought I was upping the pace, I actually slowed a tad and hit 6.08 for a 12.12 two mile. Rolled to another downhill, and as Vincent Arey came flying by I tried to mimick his light stride and pick it up. Didn't feel like I was able to drop a negative mile here, but was thinking I was just maintaing pace and could maybe drop a negative split for the second half of the race. A little disappointed when I hit 18.20 for the 3 mile mark (6.08 split).
The 4th mile saw a good climb in elevation, as well as a couple racers who passed me. This is when I got focused from Jason Martin who said "worry about the guys in front, don't look back." This stuck with me the rest of the race. I wasn't going to care who passed me I was going to keep my focus up front. The oldest trick in the book, but if you don't remember to do it, a race will get away from you in a heartbeat. Only with focus did I manage to hang on, because that 4th mile started to get me. Came through in 24.34 (6.13 split). The 5th mile we were on roads winding around Elizabeth where I had an awful performance earlier in the GPX series at the Skyline 5k, so I was keyed in to running these streets with a vengence. I started to gain on the runners ahead who passed me, while we also reeled in a couple from the pack way ahead who were slowing down. Throttled the 5th mile pretty good, and was getting geared up to stay strong the last mile. Came through 5 in (30.49 (6.14 split ??? Approx. trying to recall as my watch deleted my splits)). The last mile was a BIG climb up 7th Street, and I was fighting the whole way. I was probably most proud of my fight in this race than all the other races of 2011. I was moaning as I was climbing, trying to catch the guys in front, and not let the ones in back catch me. I was able to get 1, and keep off another. Hit 37.08 for 6 miles, 6.19 split (maybe toughest mile on the course). With .2 to go, I came up to Greg Shore and we really kicked it in. We were stride for stride, both building speed the the whole .2 until about 50 meters from the tape he got up on his toes a little quicker and got me by a second. Still a 1.07 for the .2 I will take anyday.
After the race, I was totally done for. I slept for 3 hours, and layed around the house until I decided I needed to go to Urgent Care because I believed I had strep throat. So after finding out I had a fever and my throat looked awful, I got a shot of penicllin in the buttox to cap off the day. Awesome.

9/19 Monday - Still recovering, I got antsy and wanted to run. I meant to run about 4 miles, but go into a route which didn't let me once I got past a certain point, and ended up running 50 mins around the hills behind my neighborhood. Felt okay, but got real weak the second half of the run.

400's and a Bobcats loss
Miles:3
Workout: 1 mile warm up, 4x400, 1 mile cool down.
Not having run since last Saturday, and not having gone more than 5 miles in 9 days, I decided to get in some 400s on the track near our house. Smith middle school is right on Tyvola near our neighborhood so I ran there and proceeded to get some turn over with some quarters.
Splits on the track were: 75, (1:30 rest); 74 (1:40): 76 (1:30); 66
The weather was very cold, and I am still not 100 percent healthy. It's been over a week where I have had a sore throat and feeling run down. One thing I am trying to do this week is good at least 8 hours of sleep a night, and so far I have. I just want to be feeling great come Sunday morning at the starting line.
This was also the first run outside in 8 days. The others, as you can see by the posts below have been on the treadmill. I have been trying to stay out of the cold weather because I've been sick, and today I can tell that it does make a difference, by me feeling lousy on the run.

Anyway: We went to the Bobcats game last night and they lost to the worst team in the NBA. You can see a post on it on my friend Josh's blog here.

easy 3 on the 'mill
Miles: 3
Time: 23:30
Pace: 7:50
Still fighting illness, and weather still fighting harsh winter, I again went to the Harry Y to knock out an easy 3 mile run.
This time, set the treadmill on 7:50 pace and cruised along while I watched the Tar Heels and Wolfpack in the second half. My knee bothered me today, and my legs didn't feel great alltogether on this run. My body seemed a little worn down, and this run took quite a bit of effort.

Treadmill Surprise!
Miles:5
Time:34:50
Pace: 6:58
So, today was supposed to be my last planned work out before the race on the 21st. I was wanting to do something longer, tempo like, for my last work out. Useually as you near the race, your last workouts become shorter, and you focus on speed. This is because as you begin in the training you are concentrating on base and endurance, and then it evolves to quickness and anarobic improvement, provided the base is there. Well - not having done as many "workouts" as I would have liked during the training, I still felt I needed one more tempo-style workout under my belt. Besides, I figure the more along the longer type workouts the better for the marathon, if I were to have to choose speed or endurance. Also, having some good mile repeats and 2 mile repeats under my belt, I think I should be okay - besides, I'm aiming for 8 min pace roughly for this marathon so not too much work needed to generate that kind of turnover.
Anyway, I was tossing around some ideas - 2 x 4 miles, 2 x 3 miles with a quick mile in between sets, a steady 6-7 mile tempo around 6:30 pace, or a progressive tempo starting around 7 min pace and dropping the time each mile of the non stop run. Then I began to feel under the weather on Monday.
On Tuesday as I was not feeling well, I figured I would set on a 6 mile tempo run at 6:30 pace, maybe a little quicker the second half if I was feeling okay - since I was feeling kind of sick and needed to probably concede to a "moderate" workout, as opposed to killing myself.
Well today I went to the Dr. and he advised me not to run, although I didn't have strep and he said I was just worn down and had a virus. Also, it was 50MPH winds outside and freezing so running outside - if I was going to do it - would probably not be good for my health. So...after popping a few Iburprofin, I drove to David's and we went to the YMCA after he talked me into at least getting in a few miles on the treadmill.
I felt good from the beginning. Having the ability to dictate your pace manually on the machine I started at 8 min pace for a couple mins then moved it down to uppper 7's and 730 pace the first mile and a half. After 3 miles I was moving along low 7's to 7 min pace, and the 4th mile I was dropping the pace in the 6 minute range - the last mile I got under 6 min pace - as fast as 5:22 pace for a couple mins, before finishing my last minute at 8 min pace.
So it wasn't what I wanted to do with my plan - but all things considered it was encouraging and rewarding.

RUN: O
So much for the first few weeks of the Blog living up to exciting expectations of being filled with all kinds of training logs - seems I have almost as many "non run" days as I have accounts of my training so far. Oh well, I guess that's how it goes.
Today I felt much worse that I did yesterday, and although I was tempted to try and run - I knew I would probably prolong whatever ailments I am currently going through with my immune system. I'm thinking, unless I'm really feeling lousy tomorrow, come hell or high water - I'm going to get at least a few miles in, and see how that effects me.

it's beginning to look a lot like...
...I could be getting sick.
Woke up twice before my alarm for work this morning, with a sore throat. So when my alaram did go off at 7:15am I sent work an email and told themI would not be coming in, since I wasn't feeling well.
I went back to sleep until about 9:30, at which time Katie got up. I flicked the TV on and proceeded to watch the rest of Regis and Kelly, although I was dissapointed to soon learn that Regis was not on this new episode and that Kelly's husband was co-host. Booo.
Went over to SportClips, and got my holiday trim from some young lady who has never cut my hair before, which always makes me nervous. She did a fine job, and I left feeling great after the MVP treatment. I absolutly love getting my hair washed and head massaged, and the hot towel they wrap around my face. They even finished me off with a shoulder massage. Can't beat that! - unless you are into back door speak easy type "men's lounges" where endings are oppostite of sad. After my haircut, went over and met David Brinkley at McAlisters for lunch.
I was thinking I would go home for a little bit and rest, and try for a run late afternoon. Well, my nap proved to be something which made my throat feel worse, and I decided to take today off as well. I don't know if running feeling semi under the weather would have made me feel worse or not, but I wanted to try my luck at no activity and hope to feel 100% tomorrow.
