Happy March 1st 2012

Picking off where I left off.....

After a great Sunday run on the 19th of Feb., I got up Monday the 20th and flew to L.A. for the week for work. I didn't run monday, giving the legs a rest. Tuesday I thought about running before my first appointment in the morning, but relished the sleep and comfort of my hotel bed instead. Wednesday, I finished my lunch meeting, then found some time to get in a few miles, once I set up shop over at my buddy Chirs Bohle's house in Venice Beach.

Wed., 2/22/12
Too excited to go far, and wanting to spend some time with Chris before I had to get to my next meeting for the day (the Clippers game over at Staples Center), I managed to only log a few miles. Ran up the beach bath to the Santa Monica pier and back. Just casual pace/legs feeling a bit fatigued. My watch was dead, and thus my mileage, time, and pace is all a guess
Miles: 3~

Thur, 2/23/12
Still waking up early given the time difference, I awoke to make it a little further this time down the beach and north towards Santa Monica. Instead of staying on the beach bath, I sauntered up the roads and rose in elevation as I passed the pier, and paralled the streets of SM. Made it, in my guess, about 2.25 miles before I turned around. Pace, again, was casual and easy.
Miles: 4.5~

After flying home Friday, I found myself getting in and heading back out, this time with my wife and daughter - who i was very happy to seee -, to watch my Moms championship basketball game. She is the coach of this small private school in Charlotte for the highschool girls.

Sat., 2/25/12
My legs still feeling a bit tired, but managed to go a little farther, and get some more "Shake out" as I started prepping mentally for my long run the next morning. My garmin was back. Just ran along the neighborhood streets.
Miles: 5.1
Time: 40.58
Pace: 8:03

Sun, 2/26/12
For the third Sunday morning in a row I met a group of runners at the Old Bell entrance to McAlpine park for a long run. The pace was a little faster this time, and I successfully achieved my goal of getting in 14 miles - my longest yet of the year. The pace was just dictated by the large group of quality runners, and me not wanting to fall off. Useually long runs are supposed to be slower, but with my lack luster training in the week, I don't feel this does anything BUT help me!
Miles: 14
Time: 1:39:35
Pace: 7:06

Week: 26.6~ miles for the week. 4 days running. 3 easy and short days, 1 pretty good long run.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Monday, Feb. 27th, I rested.

Tue, 2/28/12
Legs were feeling a little tired, but not too bad really. Pace was comfortable, and I kept it easy and light. Again, I'm embracing the recovery days, and after my last run on Sunday, I needed to. Ran the standard loop through Huntingtown  Farms
Miles: 7.8
Time: 1:01:08
Pace: 7:51

Wednesday - Had something pop up after work, and thus my day was shot...so, no run.

Thursday (today) March, 1st - hoping to get in some quicker running tonight, but it might be a little late. We will see what happens.

Two for the road

Tuesday, Feb. 14th:  EASY RUN. I made love to this run. No. But it was understood I was going to get a run in after work before date night with wifey. This one was smooth as silk. Ran with music and it helped pass the time. I kept the pace easy, slow, and smooth. The hills behind my neighborhood still are no walk in the park.

Miles: 6.3
Time: 49:48
Pace: 7.54

Thursday, Feb. 16th: TRACK WORKOUT. First time since last fall. Craving some speed and turnover. The weather was humid, 50's, foggy, steamy, and perfect. Ran with Jason Blackwood at Marion Diehl track after work.
Workout: 6x600m with 2 min rest. Goal: 2:05 (5:35 pace) and faster, without feeling like im gunning the whole time. Not too tall an order.
    2:04, 2:05, 2:03, 2:02, 1:58, 1:45
Only the last one did I really go hard. And that's about as hard as I can go right now (4:40 pace). It felt fun and something fresh. I'd like to visit the track again soon to keep working on my speed.
With warm up and cool down for the day got in...

The last couple of runs

Wednesday, Feb 8th:
After 3 days of no running, set out once I got back from Greenville, SC from my day of work. I did stop for a couple brews in Cramerton, so I was a little sluggish - plus just tight from not running since last Saturday (which was the Winter Flight 8k race). Anyway, started off at a good pace, but got slower towards the middle and end. At least I was happy for getting the loop in. I ran out towards Huntingtown farms and did the old 8 mile loop, full of hills.
Miles: 7.73
Time: 1:00:55
Pace: 7:53

Thursday, Feb 9th
With a basketball game later in the night yet to be played, I wanted to keep this run short and quicker - to get back that feeling after the slow trudge yesterday. Started off how I wanted. Quicker, and not feeling like I was forcing it. Able to hold it fine, and finish quicker. Mission accomplished.

i've lost that loving feeling

grinding...I tell you what, it took me over 7 miles until my legs felt decent. Tightness, stiffness, and the like plagued my legs for most of this run, as I was struggling to hit 830 miles (hilly). While I had slight relief Saturday from taking Friday off, the 19 miles set me back a little bit on the road to recovery. But that's fine, that's why I am out here grinding for just a little while longer, until the magnificent taper.

I like hills

Yesterday I couldn't find my watch, so I ran without it. David ran with me and I was happy to not run alone, as I had been for a while. He has a GPS watch so I figured that would be good enough for me.

going into the run i wasn't totally sure how i would respond to the demands of 8 miles, with 5+ of them at a hard effort. (Still not feeling 100% and sleep interuptions).

I had the route all picked out. Going to get some hills in as we ran through Starmount, and would head towards the bridge which would lead us to the park and Huntingtown Farms where we would pick up that common route which is full of hills too. Purposefully, we took the first mile easy and clicked a 7.54 and I noticed my legs were feeling actually better than the day before.

From mile one, we started grooving into low 7 pace and kept it conversational. We actually clicked off a 6.48. Okay, a little quicker for mile 2 than desired, but nothing to do but keep the momentum going. Mile 3 we started to talk less and run faster aided by a lot of downhills. 6.22. Hmmm, quicker than planned - but not feeling too bad...yet.

The forth mile I seperated from David as I was trying to hold the 6.20 pace, and I probably slowed a little bit. Approximiatly 6.30 for mile 4, and now I was just trying to fight and hold and not slow up, despite my plans of progressing faster each mile.

As I hit the hills I was feeling strong, just not quite as fast as I wanted. I was happy with my effort, but was considering ending the push a little early once I got to the top of the hills and onto Old Reid. But once I came to the top, I made up my mind to keep the push going because I had a nice straight away I could work on my turn over, and then it was just one more big down and up, that I could end with.

As I slowed for the rest, David came up and told me we were 6.5 miles into the run. Okay, mission accomplished. Just a nice mile and a half cool down together and we were finished.

We talked about how the run was tough, and that perhaps we were a bit too quick early on...and how downhills can actually zap your strength if you are not careful.

I loved the workout though. I know that route so well, and it was actually fun to run it (the H-Town hills part) back to back days.

Link from David's watch. I was 1 minute in front at the end of 6.5, before we cooled down 1.5.

new shoes, cool weather, cliff shots

despite all the positive things, as mentioned above in the title, this run wasn't a breeze. Since Friday last week, I have been slightly under the weather. My daughter has been worse. Last night she was up 5-6 times in the night battling a fever, so sleep was not solid for me.

I felt like I was pushing, but I was able to hold the pace evenly throughout the run. Ran the old standard hilly Huntingtown Farms loop. Since I know it's not quite 8 I tacked on some at the end to even it out.

getting out some frustration

After taking Sunday off because I chose to sleep, go to Church, and play 18 holes of golf, I was looking forward to hitting it with solid effort today on the run.

I took off and clicked 7.21 the first mile, and stayed there and brought it down for the rest of the run. The route wasn't easy either. I went out to H-Town Farms, down Colchester Hill, greenway, then up hills around Starmount and back. Did this run with David back in early March - here - I didn't go as fast but I averaged a good pace.

In looking at some of my old running logs from my glory days in Highschool and College, I was struck by how the pace of my runs overall was just so much quicker. I don't think you need to get carried away, but I think there is some value in training your body more times than not to get used to quicker paces.

better than yesterday

changed it up for some mental releif by taking off towards Starmount, and running along towards the bridge into H-Town park. Made it there in 18.32, then 9 and some change up to the top of Colchester Hill for 2 more miles until I called it a run. Finished in 7.29 and 7.22.

welcome back legs

I waited patiently all week for my legs to recover. Sunday, they responded, and what a very nice run! As I mentioned before, I just wanted to log some easy miles and not do anything quick with having raced the last 3 weekends in a row. You can see below that the runs this week were definitly slow, so once I set off for my long run, I could immediatly tell it was going to be a good day.

With a light lunch down, and the Master's coming on TV soon, I opted to just run from home and knock it out. I ran through Madison Park to Seneca, behind Montford, to the Greenway, up Tranquil, down Selwyn to Park Rd, up Park, then through Huntingtown Farms and back home through Montclair. Of course that route has some hills, and I counted 7 major climbs for the run. My pace started out around 7:40, to 7:30, then on down to the low 20's high teens.

Miles: 10
Time: 1.14.15
Pace: 7.24

So, in recap - I hit 5 days running this week, my first double digit LR of the year, and reached my goal of over 30 miles for the week!

motivated?

Of course once Katie and I woke up Saturday, we were quickly on our way home as we both missed our little daughter, Avery a great deal! After spending some time with her, I decided to get in 7 miles since the weather was absolutly gorgeous. Kept it at a slow pace, which wasn't hard as my legs were pretty banged up from the race - and my lack of any sort of cool down after it.

Anyway - went out and up to Huntingtown Farms, down the big Colchester Hill and out the greenway trail. Once I got to the end of the trail I decided to turn around. The clock showed 27 mins approx, and at that point I was pretty tired. Not a great run as I had to use the bathroom, felt dehydrated, and my legs were just pretty beat up.

almost sweatin' weather!

Charlotte was alive and outside as I ran around noon on this mid 70's day (and climbing!). I ran from home out to the H-Town park/greenway, and did the normal "8" mile route - probably closer to 7.75mi. Anyway, this run was a trot from the get go. north of 8 mins for the first mile, and just wore it and went with it to the end. I felt dehydrated from some drinking on Saturday night, and not very well fueld up from the brief morning I was out of bed before I laced em up. Anyway, I was able to complete the task, and not have the beautiful weather be lost on the slow affair.

steady as she goes

It's a common phrase, a song's title, an expression I heard in conversation today, and a description of the pace.

Felt real sluggish and malnourished going into the run, but I was able to get some peanut butter and honey crackers in right before to give me a little boost. David came over, and we set out to run the loop that is about a quarter mile under 8. I used to call it 8, but after several varifications from David's garmin - the distance is about 7.75. We came through the first mile in 7:34, and that was the magic number for the day as 5 of the miles hit that time exactly. The loop is pretty hilly, as I'm sure my loyal readers know, so it was pretty cool to see us hold that pace. Felt a little awkwardness in the right knee, but it wasn't discomft - so just something to stay aware of.

running to get well

Saturday's race, and subsequent night where I stayed up until 2am consoling my newborn daughter, I believe, contributed to feeling pretty worn down Sunday and had a carry over effect into Monday. So when I got off work, after feeling sick all day, I was hoping 20 mins minimum of running - 5 if I felt okay once I got warmed up - would sort of knock this little bug out. Anyway, my legs didn't feel too bad and with the chilly temps I cliked my first mile in 7.15. That's my fastest mile split on a normal run since last December. Good sign. I continued on my way and decided I would do my 5+ mile loop - up to Huntingtown Farms greenway, and then over to Starmont and back home.

Tonight I ran with the Ipod, and enjoyed the Dave Matthews radio on Pandora the whole way.

all in the stride

As I ran, my thoughts were primarily composed of paying attention to my stride thanks to the concepts of Born to Run echoing in my brain. This really has been a tremdous read, and what I have been thinking about it how us as people actually run correctly when we strike the ground with our mid food and fore foot. Not our heels. Think of a sprinter, their heels hardly contact the ground. Watch little kids run. Their strides stay quick and light, staying under their bodies.

Chris McDougall, the author, states that when the running boom took off with shoe companies designing more cushioned shoes, all it did was promote heel striking and over striding - two culprits encouraging injury. The shoes prior to these pillow bottomed shoes, were ones that were basically leather bottomed slippers.

It's all interesting food for thought, and if you haven't read the book I highly recommend it. So anyway, tonight's run I found my self paying extra attention to my stide and how I landed with each footfall.

Itching to increase the distance

While my buildup has been slow, my recent anxiousness to start logging more mileage has been spurred on in large part from reading Born to Run. If you haven't read that book, and you love running, I highly recommend it. "But you don't have to take my word for it" Lavar Burton, international superstar.

I really was thinking about my upcoming run while I was at the office, and even told Drew, my friend and colleague, that I was excited about getting my run in once I got home. Useually the joy is after the run, not before - so this was a nice feeling.

Came home, put on my running clothes and set out towards Huntingtown Farms, where, once I hit 22 minutes I was going to turn right around and come home. I picked it up a little on the way back, and focused on a smooth stride and getting back used to the hills that comes with running around where I live.

Mitchell came over and we ran the same route as Thursday, minus tacking one mile at the end, for just over 6 for the day. Good pace, easy, and the weather was cold and wet.

Getting Chilly

While Tuesday's run was the first where it was noticable cool until I was warmed up about a mile or so in, today was the first run that required long sleeves! It was in the low 50s if not already in the high 40s when I set out, and I was definitly cold until about a mile in. Never got warm in the dry fit long sleeve top - and that being said, the weather was perfect for running...once you get comfortable.

It seems like the last few times I've set out to run I start to pysch myself out the first mile or so with thoughts of "I rather be doing something else", "this is going to take too long" "I don't want to keep doing boring runs!" and other such negative vibes. However once I get going, I'm glad I'm out there doing it - and sometimes, like today, I end up tacking on more miles that I planned just because I want to keep going! The thing about running is you have to sometimes just get yourself out there and be patient. Thinking about how long you have to go, how longs its going to take, and other such things can weigh you down - but hardly ever, at least in my case, do I regret it once I'm in the middle of it, if only even at the end of the run.

These temperatures, while to me seem a little unseasonal given this early in November, are some of the best conditions to run. Today I averaged maybe my quicest run, while at an effort that was entirely natural for the called upon routine day. But, with it being 2 days out until my Half Marathon race, I definitly am "training through" whereas most times before a race you want to take off or do the minimal amount two days prior to race day. As Thunder Road is the goal, I'm treating the Half Saturday as a training run, and not sacraficing valuable days of training for the upcoming 13.1 this weekend.

Pounding the Pavement

Finally posistioned myself to take on a long run. After missed weekends, races, or staying out too late the night before, I was ready to go out and run 16. I didn't really feel like driving anywhere for the long run, and figured getting a long run done on some roads would help my legs later on for Thunder Road.

Taking the lead from Jason's long run, I mapped out an additional 8 mile run to pair with my standard H-Town route(also 8 miles). Took on the new loop first, which ran me down the Freedom Park Greenway, up Tranquill's big hill, down Selwyn, up Park Road, and back through Archdale. Once I completed that loop, I stoped and used the bathroom at home, slugged some water and a power gel, and started on the second half of the run - which by my earlier accounts is listed as quite hilly as well. I managed to stay under 8 min mile pace, close to 7:45-7:55 which is my comfortable easy pace, and tried to pick up the pace a little on the second loop. I didn't make much of a concerted effort to go faster until the last few miles where I was in the mid 7 range. Closed my last mile at 7:33.

Weather was good, wore sunglasses throughout which didn't bother me at all, and generally felt pretty pain free. What I noticed was that the fatigue came in the form of pain from the constant pounding, flaring up the last few miles.

I was pretty spent afterwards and needed to just lay around, but other activities were lined up the rest of the afternoon which prevented me from doing so, and also I was going to the Filmore to see a concert that night. Standing on my feet from 8-11:45 was hardley pleasant, and if I ever have a chance to go to a concert where I'm not just chilling on the lawn, I think I will pass.

power in numbers

Coley, David, Oelz and I ran from my house and did the 8 mile loop that I normally do: Montclair, Archdale, H-town farms, greenway, park rd, and back. Started off around 7:30 pace, and everyone was conversing and the run was really going well. The distance seemed to go faster running with company, and it was fun we could all get together. Coley is coming around in great shape, despite some shin splint pains (although that did give him the excuse to get a leg sleeve!). I dont think he was planning on doing 8 miles, so when he asked what was the short way home - I had to tell him we basically were in a circle and I couldn't help him out.

Didn't get a lot of sleep the last couple of nights, so I eat a Cliff shot before the run and had one about 20 mins into it. Coley said he was hungry so I gave him my other gummie.

About 4 miles into the run, Dave and I started putting a little space between Oelz and Coley, and up the tempo for the second half of the run. I think those caffenated chews really get me going. Coley noticed it too that he picked it up the last little bit too.

Splits: 7:29, 7:47, 7:22, 7:35, 7:23, 7:24, 7:10, 7:06.

I added on one more mile for 9.
